Travel Scope 70 was designed with traveling in mind. Highest quality materials used to ensure stability and durability. Minimal maintenance

Amazon.com Review

The Celestron 21035 Travel Scope 70 is a compact 70mm refractor telescope optimized for portability and convenience. The telescope, the tripod, and all the accessories fit conveniently into a padded backpack style soft carrying case. The complete accessory package includes a 45 degree correct image prism, a 20mm eyepiece for 20X magnification, and a 10mm eyepiece for 40X. The fully illustrated instruction manual is supplemented by a copy of "The Sky X" astronomy software that turns your PC into a virtual planetarium.

With a focal length of 400mm and a focal ratio of f/5.7, the Travel Scope 70 compares surprisingly well with popular f/5 "Short Tube 80" refractors but at a much lower cost. The Travel Scope 70 uses a number of plastic components to keep the cost and weight down, including a plastic focuser and plastic lens shade, but the all glass lenses deliver beautiful views of backyard birds during the daytime and lovely views of the Moon and stars at night.

The Travel Scope 70 offers daytime views that compare with more expensive spotting scopes. The 20mm eyepiece gives 20X magnification and a 2.5 degree field of view, with plenty of crisp detail when I’m looking at backyard birds. The travel Scope 70 is also quick and easy to set up at night. The deep orange glow of the recent Lunar Eclipse was simply gorgeous, and I was even able to take some pictures using the Travel Scope 70 and a PowerShot camera. When I look at Jupiter using the 10mm eyepiece (40X magnification) I can easily see four moons near the planet. And rich field views of the Milky Way are often at their best in a small scope with a wide field of view.

The tripod included with the Travel Scope 70 is described as a “full size photo tripod”, but I like it best as a table-top tripod with the legs kept short. The tripod is designed to be light and compact, but that means the legs are thin and wobbly when fully extended. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Light, portable, and affordable
  • Excellent wide field views
  • Padded backpack style case
  • High and low power eyepieces
  • The Sky X software included

Cons:

  • Light weight tripod
  • Plastic finder and focuser

  • All coated glass optical elements for clear crisp images
  • Smooth functioning altazimuth mount with easy pointing to located objects
  • Preassembled aluminum full size photographic tripod

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, Simple Telescope, March 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Celestron 21035 70mm Travel Scope (Electronics)
I bought this telescope so that I would have something to look at the sky with when I travel to observatories in the northern and southern hemispheres. For the price this telescope is a pretty good value; it's portable (nicely fits into my suitcase) and reasonably powerful. It's great for looking at star clusters which need a wide field of view to fit the whole thing into view. This was the first telescope I've had where I could fit the entire Pleiades cluster into the field of view. At home, it's a great telescope since it's fast to set up and take outside for a few minutes. You may not think about it, but the amount of work to set up a telescope will translate directly into how much you use it.

The only con that I see with the telescope is that the tripod it comes with is fairly unstable; it's a regular camera tripod. It may be a bit frustrating trying to center on objects since it's a bit wobbly and hard to precisely center on something since it flexes a bit as well... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, October 26, 2010

This review is from: Celestron 21035 70mm Travel Scope (Electronics)
It is a nice telescope for the fledgling hobbyist or for those that need to leave the city to see the stars. Easy to set up and maintain. The tripod that comes with it leaves much to be desired though. Its simply too light and will make the telescope jump as your trying to view through it. It is also hard to make fine adjustments. Expect to buy to better tripod.
That said the telescope is decently powered with its 2 eye pieces. Celestron is using the standard eye piece size so if you want a little more magnification just buy the appropriate eye piece. They are easy to find. Overall I expected as much and am pleased with what I got.

5.0 out of 5 stars gift, December 25, 2010

I have to say, I am very impressed. The packaging was perfect, and the delivery was very fast with this product. This made the perfect gift for my 11 yr old son, and he loves the fact that it came with its own travel bag, so that he can take it with him every where he goes. Oh, and I looked at the sky from it as well, and the stars and the moon could not look any more beautiful. I am very happy with this item.

Amazon.com Review

Celestron’s Astromaster 90AZ refractor telescope is a good choice for anyone who wants a dual purpose telescope. With more than double the light gathering power of 60mm starter scopes, it’s a great introduction to astronomy and it can double as a long range spotting scope. Bigger and more impressive than it looks in pictures, the Astromaster 90AZ is an adult size telescope that stands nearly five feet high and weighs about 20 pounds. With it’s fully illustrated quick set up guide, the telescope is easy to assemble, and the package includes an erect image prism, high and low power eyepieces, and astronomy software for your PC.

Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the Astromaster 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 20mm eyepiece (50X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (100X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the Astromaster 90AZ show me memorable views night after night. On a moonless night I like the way the 20mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium.

The AstroMaster 90 AZ also features a newly designed Alt-Azimuth mount and tripod. The tripod comes fully assembled, and the telescope simply clamps into a standard dovetail. This new tripod seems reasonably solid, I had no trouble focusing on the Moon and stars even with the high power eyepiece. An Alt-azimuth mount, of course, is best used at low to medium powers because it does not track the motion of the stars. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece, it starts drifting toward the edge-this is caused by rotation of the Earth. Celestial objects will stay in the low power field of view for three or four minutes, but with a high power eyepiece they may disappear in a minute or less.

Celestron’s AstroMaster 90 AZ is one entry level telescope that offers great views during the daytime as well as at night. The sharp optics produce a right side up image, the mount is easy to use, and the included planetarium software helps you find planets in the night sky. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Crisp clear views both day and night
  • Rugged refractor design
  • Quick and easy no-tool set up
  • Erect image prism and two eyepieces included
Cons:
  • Alt-Azimuth mount doesn’t track stars and planets
  • Star pointer not so easy to use

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Refractor Telescope, October 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Celestron 21063 AstroMaster 90 AZ Refractor Telescope (Electronics)
The Celestron Astromaster 90Az Refractor telescope is a great little starter scope. Well I shouldn't really say "little" as it is about 3ft long or so. The Altazimuth tripod is perfect for beginners as you just use it like a normal camera tripod. I prefer this much more than an equatorial mount for quick viewing. If you are new to amateur astronomy you should do some research try to learn what to expect when buying a telescope so you can know what to expect view with it. This is a great telescope for viewing the moon and other planetary viewing, it also serves well for terrestrial viewing. But if you are expecting to view brilliant images like the ones Hubble takes then you probably will be disappointed.

I also have a 4.5 reflector telescope but I can honestly say I prefer this Celestron over the the 4.5 inch one. This refractor gives a much clearer image of objects like Jupiter and its moons than my 4.5 inch. I live in a very light polluted city and I can still see Jupiter... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic scope at a great price, September 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Celestron 21063 AstroMaster 90 AZ Refractor Telescope (Electronics)
I am very impressed with this telescope. I had a Meade reflector that cost twice as much. It didn't work well for me since there are so many trees around where I live. It was computer-driven. This is sort of like having a point and shoot camera as opposed to a complicated SLR.

The scope was incredibly easy to set up right out of the box. The 90mm is longer than I was expecting but still easy to carry and not heavy. I love the deep blue color. The only complaint I would have is that the accessories tray doesn't fold up with the tripod part, you have to remove it. That is the only drawback I've found thus far.

I was able to line up Jupiter easily and see it better than I have before. Could see 4 moons and the bands on it clearly. I haven't been able to see Saturn yet, but should be able to see its rings with the magnification it has with just the lenses that came with it. Can't wait to try out my barlow lens with it.

It has great power for such a low... Read more

I bought this for my kids for christmas. I didn't want a cheap one so I went with a middle of the road model. We love it! The first night we had it out only took us a couple of tries and we were looking at the moon! My son and husband were able to find some stars. We bought some books to go along and we will start using those to see more in the sky! We are very happy with this telescope. We are beginners just to let you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for all-around nature study, August 20, 2005
This review is from: Pentax 62216 Papilio 8.5x21 Porro Prism Binocular (Electronics)
These binocs are perfect for anybody who is interested in all creatures, not just birds. We used them at the Everglades and were equally pleased with the views of birds, alligators, crabs, insects, etc. They have gotten me interested in butterflying, and for this purpose they are superb. I expect that in time, you will see rave reviews on butterfly websites. Being able to focus to 20 inches or so allows me to watch insects & spiders with as much detail as if my eye were just a couple inches from the object (if the naked eye could focus that close). The view is gorgeous. At close range, it is somewhat like looking through a dissecting microscope. Amazingly, the quality of the image is very good (for both near & far objects). I tried some truly bad binoculars ($100 cheapies, zoom binocs, etc.) while shopping around and the Papilio is definitely at a much higher level of quality. To me, the quality is not noticeably different from that of the $350 birding binoculars (8x32, etc.)... Read more

This review is from: Pentax 62216 Papilio 8.5x21 Porro Prism Binocular (Electronics)
I needed a light weight small size binocular for bird and concert viewing and these worked for me. I was also amazed to be able to see tiny insects on flowers that were not really visible without using the binoculars. I read many reviews on Amazon before purchasing these and am very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A long-distance dissecting microscope for the field!, September 5, 2009

This review is from: Pentax 62216 Papilio 8.5x21 Porro Prism Binocular (Electronics)
This binocular is a wonderful instrument! Its close-focusing ability is nothing short of astonishing.
Carrying one of these in the field is like having a long-distance dissecting microscope in your pocket.
I purchased mine prior to a hike to Paradise Park on Mt Hood in Oregon, and I could not be more pleased with its performance.
For example, an unusual-looking fly alit on a wildflower in the meadow, and I was able to observe both in great detail.
The anatomy of the fly was quite clear -- its palps, its eyes, the veins of its wings, even the hairs on its body -- all were crisply presented.
Similarly, every structure of the flower was revealed -- a better view, in fact, than I might obtain with a magnifying glass in close proximity.
It was also easy to get a good image of distant objects; for example, to observe features on the mountain, or to identify birds in the trees at a range of roughly 50 meters.
For distance viewing it is certainly no match... Read more
