Let's cut to the chase: If you're looking for an inexpensive microscope for younger children, the Duo-Scope would be very difficult to beat for features, quality, and cost.

After reviewing several sources on inexpensive microscopes, I took a chance for Christmas on this less documented model. I'm glad I did.

PROS:

* Solid construction. Despite its light weight, it feels like a coherent whole and has no rattling pieces. The objective lenses click nicely into place and the mechanics have a silky feel when operated. This model considerably betters the microscope I had as a child growing up in the Sixties, so some items ARE better made today than yesteryear.

My husband and I are both scientists, so when my 5-year-old daughter asked for a microscope we were thrilled. However, it was important to us to get one where the optics were actually decent, so she could see things easily and not get frustrated with science at an early age. After reading many reviews of kids' microscopes in the $50-100 price range, we chose this one. It was very easy to set up, is easy to focus, and gives very clear views of the objects we looked at. My husband ordered some pre-mounted slides (not sure which set, but they are very good - they include paramecium, bacteria, nerves, brain tissue, and the usual things like pollen and insect parts). With a top magnification of 400x we could just see the little specks that were the bacteria (as expected), but everything else was a joy to look at. The greatest joy was watching my daughter run around the house shouting that she had seen germs and brains. My husband pooh-poohed the fact that this microscope only has a single... Read more

this product has been great. it was a gift for a four year old girl. the extra slides are nice for creating specimens. being cordless makes it easy to maneuver and the magnification works well using the light top or bottom.
